Ingredients

  • 12 slices day-old French bread (1 inch thick)
  • 6 large eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups 2% milk
  • 1 cup half-and-half cream
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar For the Topping
  • 1/2 cup melted butter For the Topping
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup For the Topping
  • 1 cup chopped pecans For the Topping
  • 4 cups fresh strawberries, chopped For the Topping
  • Additional maple syrup for serving

Instructions

  • Preheat your baking dish: Grease a 13x9-inch baking dish to ensure your French toast doesn't stick.
  • Layer the bread: Arrange the bread slices in a single layer in the dish.
  • Make the custard: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, cream, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
  • Soak the bread: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices. Press lightly to ensure the custard is well absorbed.
  • Prepare the topping: In a small bowl, mix brown sugar, melted butter, and maple syrup. Stir in the chopped pecans.
  • Assemble: Spread the pecan topping generously over the custard-soaked bread.
  • Refrigerate: Cover the dish and refrigerate overnight to let the flavors meld.
  • Bake: Preheat your oven to 350°F. Remove the dish from the refrigerator while the oven heats. Bake uncovered for 40-50 minutes until the top is golden and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Let it cool: Allow the dish to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
  • Serve: Top with chopped strawberries and a drizzle of maple syrup. Enjoy!
