Ingredients

  • 12 ounces spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes (28 ounces)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup fresh basil chopped
  • Grated Parmesan cheese for serving

Instructions

  • Cook the spaghetti according to package instructions until al dente. Reserve 1/2 cup of pasta water, then drain and set aside.
  • In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Once shimmering, add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant.
  • Pour in the crushed tomatoes, and stir in the sugar, salt, and black pepper. Slowly bring the sauce to a simmer.
  • Let the sauce simmer gently for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally to enhance the flavors and thicken slightly.
  • Add the cooked spaghetti directly into the skillet with the sauce. Toss well with tongs to coat the pasta evenly.
  • If the sauce appears too thick, add a splash of the reserved pasta water, a little at a time, to loosen it.
  • Mix in the fresh basil just before serving to retain its vibrant green color and flavor.
  • Plate the pasta and sprinkle generously with freshly grated Parmesan cheese. Serve immediately and enjoy!
